The European Union is introducing two important changes for travel to Europe. These are:

  • EU Entry/Exit System (EES)
  • European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS)

EES commenced on 12 October 2025 and will be gradually introduced, aiming to become fully operational by 10 April 2026.

You won't need an ETIAS to travel this year. The EU plans to introduce ETIAS towards the end of 2026.

What’s changing?

The EU Entry/Exit System is a new electronic system that replaces the physical stamping of passports at passport control for arrivals and departures.

Instead of having your passport stamped, your entry and exit will be recorded electronically. This means your details will be stored in a secure EU database when you cross the border.

Until you've registered in the new system, your passport will still be stamped as usual.

Passengers travelling on a cruise will not need to undergo EES entry or exit checks for European day trips included in their itinerary.

If you are flying to a European country to join a cruise, you will complete the EES entry process at the airport where you first arrive. If your cruise ends in an EU country, your exit will be recorded at the border control of the airport from which you leave to return home.

Irish passport holders are exempt from EES. If you are a British passport holder but have EU residency, you are also exempt from EES.

What do I need to do before travelling?

Nothing new – travel as usual. There’s no need to register or apply in advance.

What happens when I arrive?

You will be required to perform the EES checks, and instructions will be provided upon arrival at the airport or port.

This may cause longer delays at passport control, where you'll need to present your passport, have your face photographed, and have your fingerprints scanned.

If flying, the usual guideline is to arrive at the airport at least two hours before departure for flights from Europe. We recommend this as a minimum and suggest checking with the airline and airport.

What happens when returning from holiday?

Passengers should proceed directly to passport control after checking in and passing security, to complete the EES checks early.

We recommend that passengers follow their airlines/train guidance on arrival times at airports or stations.
