SAN JACINTO & SAN BASILIO DE PALENQUE
Two hours south of Cartagena you will find the village of San Jacinto, a town of indigenous heritage, known for its traditional crafts, music, and Gaita instruments. Next stop will be San Basilio de Palenque. Founded by escaped slaves during the 17th Century, this tiny village was deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 due to its strong African musical and cultural traditions. It is considered the first free town in the Americas. Observe a community where African roots and traditions have been preserved and maintained with a distinct creole language (Palenquero), folkloric dance, cuisine, dress, hairstyles, political organization and social structure.
